The Machrie Hotel: A Boutique Golf Destination
During his time at Hudson Architects, John served as Project Architect on the redevelopment of The Machrie, a well-known local landmark on the Isle of Islay. Once a neglected and deteriorating building, the hotel was carefully reimagined and expanded into a 47-bedroom boutique golf destination, located on the edge of the scenic Laggan Bay.
John led the architectural team in collaboration with a skilled group of consultants and specialists. The project balanced preservation and innovation, with a design approach that respected the heritage of the site while enhancing its functionality and appeal. The original front elevation of the hotel was sensitively restored, retaining key architectural details to honour the building’s character. In contrast, the new additions that were designed to address the golf course, introduce a more contemporary aesthetic, featuring generous ceiling heights and expansive glazing that frames panoramic views across the bay and landscape.
The external design responds to the surrounding context through the careful use of local materials and traditional forms, allowing the building to sit comfortably within its setting. The result is a cohesive composition of old and new, in which the original structure and modern extensions complement one another rather than compete.
Throughout the project, attention was given to integrating the building into its dramatic coastal environment while delivering a high-quality guest experience. The Machrie now offers a unique blend of heritage and contemporary comfort, re-establishing its place as a valued part of the island community and a destination for visitors from further afield.
