Timber-framed ‘Boathouse’ Extension to a home on The Norfolk Broads

The brief for this project was to extend a 1920’s chalet-bungalow in an imaginative way and to provide a better connection to the garden and existing swimming pool.  By extending out from the existing kitchen below the eaves-line we were able to leave the existing roof undisturbed.  This created a large double-aspect family space, which links the old with the new addition.

The new ‘wing’ provides flexible space to work from home as well as a double-height space which opens out to a new pool deck area. A new hallway space was created which runs from to back, allowing light to flood in.  This features an ingenious oversized ‘cupboard’ which allows the hall to double up as a practical laundry area, which can be hidden from sight once the life-admin is done.   The study is located at the far end of the extension with views of the eastern garden and morning light, providing lofty and airy interior spaces for the upper floor office.

The roof extends beyond the gable-end to create a light and airy covered entertainment area next to the pool.  Above is space to store canoes and boating equipment. A simple palette of materials was proposed, inspired by local examples of boathouses and sheds in the area, whilst providing a contemporary feel. Lightweight cladding reduces the embodied energy of the wall construction and new profiled metal roof will allow fine detailing to enhance the contemporary feel of the extension, whilst allowing for simple construction.
