Masterplan sketch of Colney Hall with UEA and NIHA
Colney Hall survey

Colney Hall

Redhead were delighted to submit competition proposals for a masterplan and care centre at Colney Hall. The unique site is being developed as a specialist healthy ageing facility with input from UEA, the Norwich Institute for Healthy Ageing (NIHA) and many other partners.

Our submission focussed on how to develop a brief, with multiple stakeholders, into an overarching site infrastructure that allows the masterplan and buildings to be delivered in phases.

Underpinning the entire proposal was an approach to building standards, ensuring that the scheme is both environmentally and economically as sustainable as possible.

Redhead’s approach was to enhance and use the existing features of the hall and site, which have become eroded over time.

A new access drive makes use of the existing parkland, and establishes a direct route to the wooded north of the site where buildings can be arranged in woodland clearings.

The site topography and extensive screening can accommodate large buildings with interesting forms.  Proposals accommodate a wide range of needs, from visiting members of the public, to those delivering and receiving the most specialised dementia care.
